Subject:   H1N1 “Swine Flu" virus

The emergence of the H1N1 swine flu virus in Mexico, the United States and several other countries is of concern to all.  The virus, a highly contagious strain to which we have no immunity, causes fever, cough, body aches, and respiratory distress, potentially resulting in death.  Although there have been no fatal cases reported as yet in the US, there have been numerous fatalities in Mexico.  For more information about the WHO Pandemic Level please use the following link: http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/phase/en/index.html

We should all take this threat very seriously and there are a number of precautions that each of us should take to reduce the possibility that we will be infected with the virus.  All persons working in the buildings should:

We also recommend that you advise your employer if exposed to persons with the flu or if you experience flu-like symptoms and determine the appropriate course of action to ensure the safety of other building occupants and the public at large.

Your building management staff will be taking appropriate precautions which may include:

Please heed all public health recommendations issued by the authorities and building management staff.  They are intended to protect you and others in the building.

Please be advised, however, that there are certain sanitary practices that are strongly advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help you avoid contracting the flu.  They include:

1)    Avoid close contact with people who are sick

2)    Stay at home when you are sick

3)    Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing

4)    Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water

5)    Wash children's hands frequently

6)     Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands with soap and water

7)    Avoid touching your face as much as possible

Presently there are 64 (As of April 28, 2009 11:00 AM ET) laboratory cases, 10 confirmed in California, in the United States.  A first case was confirmed in northern California, where a student was found with the virus at a school in a Sacramento suburb.

Thank you for your cooperation and please stay as informed as possible about Swine Influenza through regular media channels.  The most-up-to-date information can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's website at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu

Finally, if you believe that any person in the building has been exposed to the virus or you observe someone who appears to have flu-like symptoms, please contact the building management office immediately.
